Under the same roof

(Upon reading Fall On Your Knees

Ann-Marie MacDonald
When the house was helmeted
against assaults or blessings
from the heavens
we and everything that sheltered underneath
stayed dry and clean and coolish-warm
commanding comfort and rejoicing
in the tamed light of
this newly minted kingdom.

But, since space had thus been split
by planned expulsion of the boundless sky
in consequence
an underside of undesired and inadvertent
cloistered air
was smuggled downwards, inwards
darkly trussed and sullen
cobwebbed nest
for creatures of the night that scuttled
sucked our breath and brooded

just above our waking dreams.
